An Exercise in Attentive Looking is a guided experiential viewing session led by art theorist Evagoria Dapola, developed on the occasion of the exhibition Bill Viola. Unspoken.
The session unfolds as an exercise in attentive looking and perceptual attunement. It explores how we use attention to encounter time-based media and how that encounter may continue beyond the duration of the visit itself.
Rather than offering an interpretation of the artworks or a curatorial reading of the exhibition, the session operates as a threshold experience—something that takes place at the edge of the exhibition rather than solely within it. Participants are invited to consider what it means to encounter a moving image before being told how to understand it.
The methodology aims to prepare and extend the viewing experience, proposing attentive looking as a way of engaging more consciously with the works and allowing them to unfold as complete experiences in themselves.
